How to Qualify for EVO Las Vegas

EVO is the largest fighting game tournament in the world. The good news: most main-stage tournaments are open registration — you don't have to qualify. The bad news: you'll be in a pool with 2,000-7,000 other players.

1. Pick your main game

EVO 2026 lineup typically includes Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Guilty Gear Strive, Mortal Kombat 1, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dragon Ball FighterZ. Smash Bros has its own venue/format. Pick the game you're already grinding online.

2. Register early

Registration opens around February for the August event. Entry fee: $20-$50 per game + EVO badge ($65). You can enter multiple games but scheduling can conflict. The earlier you register, the better your seed in pools.

3. Practice with real competition

EVO is double-elimination single-game-mode (no character switches between matches). Grind ranked online (Master/Celestial rank on SF6 / Tekken 8 / etc.) and attend regional tournaments before EVO. Online ≠ offline — practice offline at local FGC events.

4. Book hotel near Mandalay Bay or Strip

EVO is held at Mandalay Bay (recent years) or other large Vegas venues. Convention hotel blocks have discounted rates ($150-$300/night). Book 4-6 months out. Walking distance saves you Uber money for 4 days.

5. Pack and prep

Bring your controller (fightstick or pad). Backup batteries. USB extension cable. Snacks/water (venue food is expensive). Comfortable seating (you'll wait in pools for hours). Hand wipes for shared cabinets.

6. Day-of execution

Arrive 30 min before your pool. Report to your station number. Warm up with offline practice mode if possible. Stay hydrated. After getting eliminated (most do), stay to watch top 8 — it's the best part.

7. Top 8 spectator experience

If you're not in Top 8 (you almost certainly won't be your first EVO), the Top 8 stadium broadcast is the cultural experience. Buy a finals ticket separately. Front-row energy is legendary.

Frequently asked

Do I need to qualify for EVO?

No — EVO main-stage tournaments are open registration. Anyone can pay the entry fee and play. There are no qualifier requirements. You'll just be in a pool with 2,000-7,000 other players to fight through.

How long does EVO last?

4 days. Friday opens registration and starts pools, Saturday is day-2 pools and top 32, Sunday is Top 8 finals on main stage with live broadcast.

What does it cost to attend EVO?

Entry $20-$50 per game + EVO badge $65. Hotel 4 nights ~$600-$1,200. Travel $200-$600. Meals $200. Total realistic: $1,200-$2,500 for a 4-day Vegas trip.

Yes if you play one — venue cabinets share generic equipment which can feel different. Most pro players bring fightsticks. Pad players (controller) similarly bring their own controller.
